The Lore

In October 1903, residents of Van Meter, Iowa reported a large winged creature that emitted a blinding light from a horn on its forehead. Over three consecutive nights, the creature was seen by multiple prominent citizens including a doctor, a banker, and a hardware store owner. Armed townsfolk fired at it repeatedly with no effect. On the final night, two creatures emerged from an old coal mine before disappearing underground.

In early October 1903, the small agricultural town of Van Meter, Iowa, was seized by a terror that local newspapers struggled to adequately describe. Over the course of five consecutive nights, beginning on October 1, a creature unlike anything in the region's experience appeared in the streets and on rooftops of this community of approximately 1,000 residents. The witnesses were not vagrants or excitable strangers but pillars of the community: the town's banker, physician, hardware store owner, and a local lawyer were among those who encountered the entity and later testified to its reality.

The creature was described as roughly human in height but broad and winged, covered in what several witnesses called a smooth hide. Its most distinctive feature was a blunt, cone-shaped horn projecting from its forehead that emitted a brilliant light, described as bright enough to temporarily blind anyone caught in its beam. Witnesses reported that it moved with an unsettling half-hop, half-glide motion, and when it spread its wings and rose into the air, the beating produced a sound compared to the flapping of enormous sails. It smelled strongly and unpleasantly. The creature appeared immune to gunfire. Multiple witnesses fired rifles and shotguns at close range with no apparent effect.

The sightings came to a head when the creature was traced to an abandoned coal mine shaft on the edge of town. Several townspeople armed themselves and gathered at the mine entrance. A second creature, smaller than the first, emerged alongside the original, and after a brief confrontation the two entities descended into the shaft. The townspeople sealed the mine with debris, and the Visitor was not seen again.

The Van Meter Visitor remained largely unknown outside Iowa until researchers Chad Lewis, Noah Voss, and Kevin Lee Nelson compiled the historical newspaper accounts and witness testimonies into a comprehensive study published in 2013. The original reports, drawn from multiple contemporary newspapers including the Des Moines Daily News, proved remarkably consistent in their core details. Skeptical explanations have ranged from elaborate hoax to mass hysteria, but the sheer number and social standing of witnesses, combined with the pre-internet uniformity of the accounts, makes simple fabrication difficult to sustain as a complete explanation. The Van Meter Visitor stands as one of the most peculiar and thoroughly documented paranormal encounters in American Midwestern history.
