Big Muddy Monster

On the night of June 25, 1973, a young couple parked along a road on the outskirts of Murphysboro, Illinois heard a shrieking cry from the woods near the Big Muddy River. Moments later a large, pale, mud-caked figure came out of the trees toward their car. They fled and reported it to the Murphysboro police, who found matted-down grass and a strong odor at the scene but no tracks distinct enough to cast. The following night, officers on patrol had their own encounter nearby, and both incidents made it into the department's official case log rather than staying local rumor, which is unusual for an American cryptid report of this kind.

Witnesses across the encounters describe a bipedal creature roughly seven to eight feet tall, covered in matted light-colored or white fur or hair, coated in river mud, with a heavy build and a strong smell. It reappeared twice more over the following fifteen years. On January 26, 1975, four truckers driving separately along Illinois Route 149 west of town radioed in nearly identical descriptions of a large, bear-like animal crossing the highway. In 1988, a salvage yard owner and his family spotted the creature on their property; when the owner and an employee fired at it, it did not flee but pounded on the walls of their metal office building for over half an hour while the group sheltered inside.

Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman traveled to Murphysboro to investigate the original 1973 wave and concluded the pattern fit a Bigfoot-type report rather than a known hoax. The 1973 case remains, by the department's own account, one of only two unsolved files in Murphysboro's police archive, an unusual level of institutional documentation for a story usually confined to campfire retelling.

The most-cited skeptical account comes from Jerry Nellis, a tracker involved in the original search, who maintained afterward that the group had most likely been trailing a bear, an animal capable of the size, the smell, and the bipedal glimpses reported at night. No physical evidence, cast, or photograph has ever surfaced to settle it either way, and Murphysboro's own police spokesperson at the time put it plainly: they didn't know what the creature was, but they believed the witnesses had seen something real. The town has since embraced the story rather than downplayed it, commissioning a bronze statue and a downtown mural of the Big Muddy Monster and folding it into local business branding.
